Illustration Friday: Signs

Signs of the Times

This is an old assignment I did in the mid 90’s for a computer hardware company. The truest sign of the times in this piece is not really evident. This is an acrylic airbrush painting. While there are lots of traditional mediums I still enjoy, today I would rarely pull out an airbrush. I would do this assignment digitally. Interesting how our techniques, materials and processes change. Leave me a comment and tell me how yours have changed?

You’re so right it makes me sad, no sign to paradise or even to pleasure…

love the look of it, colorful yet kind of wistful and faded:)

Yeah, I agree with Bookbabie. Colorful yet somewhat faded, as though it is a memory of a dream. What great technique you had/have! Can you approximate this digitally?

Yes, digitally this illustration would be a snap. It was quite a challenge in airbrush. I never really considered myself much of an airbrush illustrator. I learned just enough to get by so this was difficult for me. The type on this piece was rub down type. That alone would have made this a perfect candidate for digital execution.

Outstanding airbrush job. I have never done anything digitally before. I went to the nearest Best Buy one day and I couldn’t find an art program. I need a pencil or brush in my hand. I just cant move the mouse the way I want to. Digital work keeps the desk clean, but I still like getting out the paints.

I agree Mike. I like getting out the paints too. Especially for the more painterly techniques such as watercolor or oils. Airbrush, however, especially in technical subject matter is well handled by the computer these days. Photoshop and a Wacom stylus pad are a great way to do this.

    Nicely done!

I resisted working on the computer at first but now it’s just easier and quicker. I prefer the look and feel of traditional art and am trying to keep up with both.
